We cannot speak about an experience with Century 21 since the only person we were in touch with was the real estate agent Herr Unger. He was very helpful quickly gathering all necessary documents and organizing multiple visitations of the apartment. He advised my wife and me well, considering that this was the first time we bought real estate. Also, he was readily available to reach over the phone or via message. In the end we were able to successfully purchase the place thanks to his help, but there were multiple instances during the whole buying process that concerned us.
First, he helped arrange a meeting with a financial adviser, that he shares an office with. In the beginning that felt like a good coincidence, but after seeking advice from a different financial consultant to get a second opinion we quickly realized that the offer of Herr Unger's friend/colleague did not meet our best interests but rather his own to get a substantial commission. When we wanted to switch the financial adviser to set up the loan with the bank, Herr Unger kept pushing us to stick to his friend/colleague. We were afraid that the deal would get cancelled so we did not switch but made Herr Unger's friend/colleague give us the exact same conditions as the other financial adviser. We felt cornered during this whole situation, because we did not want to lose the apartment and we still cannot shake off the feeling that he made a deal with his friend/colleague to get a cut of the commission. Whether that is true or not we will never know but we certainly were not under the impression that Herr Unger put our priority for smartly financing the mortgage below the financial gain of his friend/colleague.
The second problem was the invoice we received for Herr Unger’s services. Even though we agreed in writing prior to the successful purchase of the apartment to a price his commission was fixed to, the first invoice included a commission for the additional purchased parking spot. Luckily, Herr Unger adjusted the invoice to the price we agreed upon after we reminded him about that e-mail exchange. But this incident unfortunately was an unnecessary burden on our relationship to him.
The third and last issue was that Herr Unger forgot to hand over a binder of documents that he should have given us after the successful purchase of the apartment. One year after the handover of the apartment he realized that the documents were still at his office. Instead of delivering them to us, we had to pick them up at his office. It is a minor detail but in consideration with the experiences listed above, we do not want to work with Herr Unger again.
