The typical scenario of a messy household
After a long time, you want to visit your mother at home again. Maybe you live further away, so you only see each other rarely and keep in touch by phone. Or maybe you live nearby and see each other regularly. Recently, however, your mother has always given you good reasons for not seeing her at home. Perhaps your mother has finally invited you over again today after several months. Or perhaps you have been worried for a while that something is wrong and have therefore decided to visit your mother at home without prior notice to see how things are going.
When you arrive at your mother's house, she looks outside through a small crack to greet you. The front door can hardly be opened - as if something is blocking the way. Your mother asks you to wait a moment, you hear a rumble and finally get in through a slightly larger crack. What awaits you behind the front door silences you. Even in the hallway, you are barely able to put one foot in front of the other - the piles of decorations, clothes and apparently useless objects are too big. In addition, among all the mountains of objects of various kinds, you occasionally see returnable bottles, packaging waste and envelopes. The air is bad, it smells musty. Startled, you look speechlessly at your mother, who is standing next to you.
Messy home syndrome: basic information
What may sound like a fictional story to many people at first is a bitter reality for those affected. We are talking about the so-called Messie Syndrome.
In order to be able to support an affected person as a relative or other close person or to be able to change something yourself as an affected person, it is helpful to understand the Messie Syndrome in the first place.
People with the Messy Person Syndrome find it very difficult to part with or dispose of objects. Those affected accumulate an excessive amount of different things at home without any recognizable order for outsiders. As a result, they neglect and sometimes litter their own living space. Cluttering up their own living space makes it difficult to walk around and therefore no longer properly usable.
The medical classification
Messie syndrome is not yet listed in ICD-10, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. However, it does appear in the DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. While the ICD-10 lists existing medical illnesses of various kinds (including mental illnesses), the DSM-5 is a classification developed specifically for mental disorders.
But what does this mean in concrete terms?
The inclusion of the Messie syndrome in this special classification system makes it clear that the Messie syndrome must be seen for what it is: a disorder. Those affected are not (contrary to many prevailing prejudices) too lazy or unwilling to treat their own living space with care and attention. Due to their mental state in their particular life situation, people with the disease are not in a position to part with the objects they have collected. If a change is to be brought about, they need some kind of support.
A side effect of mental illness
In most cases, hoarding syndrome occurs as a side effect of one or more mental illnesses. In this context, psychotic illnesses, obsessive-compulsive and attention deficit disorders, depression and addictions should be mentioned.
The lives of schizophrenic or psychotic people can be dominated by delusions and associated fears, for example. Their own home is often used as a protective space against the supposed dangers in the environment. For example, hoarding objects in their own home can convey a sense of security and thus be experienced as a relief from mental health problems. Excessive collecting can also convey a sense of security for people with dementia. It creates the feeling of being able to maintain one's own world a little further, while the loss of one's own memory abilities and thus also the original living environment continues to progress.
In the case of existing addictions, the typically chaotic and unstructured collection of things is more an expression of the loss of control that is characteristic of the lives of people suffering from addiction. In contrast, people with obsessive compulsive disorder often hoard in a structured manner.
This list is by no means exhaustive. Rather, our aim is to raise awareness of the fact that every person affected by the Messie Syndrome has a right to be perceived as an individual. No two living environments and realities are the same.
