I went to Martial Instinct when I first moved to Cologne because I wanted to be able to defend myself. On this point I'd like to point out that I wasn't the typical member. In fact I rather stood out. I was eighteen and definitely not as badass as the rest, I was more the pink and fluffy variety ;) I'm pretty good natured and my killer instinct was seriously lacking! In one word: harmless.
I'd never done any kind of martial arts so I had a lot of trouble at first and I really cried a lot. Especially sparring was and still is hard on me.
I thought I wasn't though enough and I was seriously expecting my trainers to tell me it wasn't going to work out. But they were convinced that I could do this and determined to teach me.
Not only the trainers but the people too are great and they always look out for me. They tone it down for me so I can learn in my own time and nobody has ever said anything about me crying rivers every damn training. And boy did I! But they were very sweet, they helped me along and gave me all the time I needed to stop bursting into tears every time I got hit in the face. That's pretty amazing!
I leaned so much! Starting from zero I can see my improvement clear as day. And everyone else can too. They encourage me and the trainers notice too and help with tips and encouragement.
The atmosphere is great, even though we are training in martial arts and you do get punched a bunch. But we always laugh about it afterwords, we compare our moves and strategies and sometimes just chat. Especially me.
I met a lot of kindred spirits and made new friends, some/most of them so very different from my usual girly group ;)
I got so much stronger and tougher and don't cry anywhere near as often as in the beginning! Some of the newcomers even think I'm pretty tough and can't believe it when I tell them how I was in the beginning :)
I learned a lot of really cool stuff and I don't have to be as afraid of walking home alone anymore. I can safely say coming to Martial Instinct was one of the best ideas I ever had! And I would do it all over again!
Be is huge tattooed dudes, tough women, fighting machines, people that want to burn calories (yes we have those too;) or the occasional pink and fluffy specimen. Martial Instinct is seriously for everyone!
