Sabine Barzen was on the Ranch Koiimasis in Namibia for 6 weeks at the end of 2022, actually as a volunteer, but she did much more for us than that. She treated 20 horses in her time and not only once, she also did the aftercare for us and beyond that she gave us a lot of knowledge how to further support our horses ourselves in the future.
Sabine has empathized with each individual horse and has responded precisely to their personal problems and sensitivities. It was great to see how even nervous, anxious horses suddenly started to yawn and chew - as a horse lover, your heart swells when you see how your beloved animals enjoy the treatment.
I would like to highlight their performance with one horse in particular: Milkshake, a 10-year-old gray gelding who had been unrideable for over half a year due to lameness in his left shoulder. After just the first treatment, there was a marked improvement, and after three more, he was cautiously rideable again (after appropriate rest). She definitely saved Milkshake's life with this - thank you Sabine!
The horses at Koiimasis were also a challenge for Sabine, not because they were untrained, but because they have much more natural instincts than domesticated stable horses. None of them has ever seen an osteopath - in a third world country like Namibia there are not so many opportunities. Our horses live about 90 percent of their lives wild and free in nature, sometimes they are not ridden for more than a year and enjoy their life in an environment that cannot be more species-appropriate. Of course, such a life is also marked by hardships: Droughts, predators and ranking fights are very hard on the substance. Nevertheless, these horses show an incredible bite, an impressive stamina and an endless motivation under the rider. Especially our tour horses, which Sabine has treated completely, are high performance athletes, which are ridden on guest rides up to 7 hours through mountain and valley and do not get tired. I describe this to illustrate the range of tasks Sabine had to deal with here. I think that hardly any trained osteopath in Germany has had such a chance to develop his or her skills and to gain so much experience with so many different horses in such a short time. We and especially the horses are very much looking forward to Sabine coming to visit us again this year! Thank you dear Sabine for your endless commitment, I know it cost you a lot of strength, thank you for that!
The Ranch Koiimasis is located in the Karas region, in the south of Namibia, in the middle of the beautiful Tiras Mountains and at the edge of the Namib Desert. The German speaking Izko family has been breeding American Quarter and Paint Horses there for about 20 years and offers a unique western riding adventure.
On an area of about 38,000 hectares live almost 200 horses wild and free and enjoy their lives in an environment which could not be more appropriate to the species. They gallop in large herds through the endless savannah, hold their own against predators and also raise their offspring there. The horses are gently broken in, making them the perfect companion on adventurous cowboy trails and riding safaris.
