Great coaching that really helped me!

After more than 20 years in technical field service, I found myself facing the challenge of reorienting my career. In the process, I realized that, despite my experience, there were still some areas I needed to work on.

I’d especially like to highlight Markus Kimpel, with whom I worked most closely. He was very empathetic in addressing my situation. Together, we identified and overcame some of my mental blocks. He helped me focus on completely different aspects—ones that were important to me—that I hadn’t even noticed before. Working with video recordings also showed me what I still need to work on. To be honest, I was a little skeptical at first about whether the coaching would actually help me. Although I have many years of professional experience, before the coaching I believed that I would first need to complete additional training in Germany—partly to demonstrate to potential employers that I am familiar with and integrated into the German professional environment. At the time, I didn’t feel that my resume or cover letter were fundamentally inadequate. However, my confidence in finding the right job had taken a bit of a hit by then.

As the coaching sessions began, I started to feel better and better. At first, I worked with Coach Kohnen. I told him that, from my perspective, I needed further professional development in Germany and that I had to present my diverse career in a positive light, since I had worked at banks, leasing companies, private companies, public companies, and the UNDP, among others. My impression was that potential employers might perceive me as unfocused because of this. Coach Kohnen helped me rebuild my self-confidence. He showed me that it’s perfectly fine to have different versions of a resume. At the same time, he explained that my resume needed to be better structured to avoid automatic rejection, since most companies nowadays use AI for the initial screening of applications. We worked on my profile, and he also showed me useful and detailed AI prompts that I can use. He also gave me more confidence to write about and highlight my professional achievements. He helped me with my cover letter as well, guiding me to identify and rephrase terms that were outdated in a professional context.

Since I had difficulty with my German during longer job interviews, working with Coach Markus was very helpful in overcoming this problem. It wasn’t about the German language itself. Coach Markus gave me helpful tips for preparing for job interviews. On the one hand, it was about preparing better for possible questions, but also about making sure I asked questions myself at the end of the interview. In addition, I should speak more slowly and finish each sentence instead of cramming everything into a single long, never-ending sentence. He also told me to pause between sentences, smile a little more, and be authentic. I recorded myself doing my speaking exercises. After the first recording, I understood why it might have been difficult for employers to hire me: there was a gap between my qualifications and experience on the one hand, and the way I presented myself in job interviews on the other. With practice, things got better and better, and I regained my confidence—not only in speaking German but also in presenting myself and my professional background in a positive light.

Then I worked with Coach Maureen. Those sessions were pivotal. Before that, I couldn’t have imagined how many important details I was still unaware of. Coach Maureen provided me with incredibly useful insights for LinkedIn, my resume, and my cover letter. Her eye for detail and her talent for creating application materials that are both professional and visually appealing are unmatched. Working with her gave me an extra level of confidence and, at the same time, a greater awareness of how to make my application materials even more professional. She gave me helpful tips on how and which colors to use depending on the context and in general. She also explained to me why the application materials as a whole should not exceed three pages and even how I should name the various files in my application so that they are more visible to recruiters and don’t get lost (!). Most importantly, however, she introduced me to a document that was completely new to me—the motivation presentation. I had no idea such a document existed, and at first thought it would be redundant given the cover letter. She helped me a great deal with the structure, the graphics, the content, and emphasizing data protection. This helped me understand how this document fits into the overall picture and perception of an application, how it differs from the cover letter, and how it can be decisive in candidate selection. Coach Maureen is a true expert in her field.

All the coaches are friendly and communicative. Working with them was straightforward. Although my sessions were scheduled quite tightly and it wasn’t easy to maintain my concentration and my ability to speak German over an extended period, my experience was very, very positive and helpful for my ongoing job search and applications. They tailored the program to my individual needs. Many tips and new approaches were suggested and discussed. Conducting the program via Teams worked perfectly for me. I really appreciated having multiple coaches, as each one brought their own perspectives to the table. I benefited a lot from it, and I’ll recommend this company and this format to others.
If there’s anything to criticize, for me it’s the Teamup calendar. I only knew about the first session and found out during that session that there were already many long-planned sessions scheduled. In this regard, I would prefer if the session dates were sent directly in the first email (ideally formatted for iPhone, Google, and Outlook calendars).

The coaching sessions with Markus, Richard, and Maureen fully met my expectations. I found the combination of three coaches to be very effective, since each has their own individual strengths, which allowed us to address my personal goals in the best possible way.
