The typical scenario of a Messie household
After a long time, you would like to visit your mother at home again. Maybe you live farther away, so you rarely see each other and rather keep in touch by phone. Or maybe you live nearby and see each other regularly. Lately, however, your mother has always given good reasons for not meeting at her home. Maybe your mother has finally invited you to her home after several months. Or maybe you've been worried for a while that something was wrong, so you decided to visit your mother at home without notice and check up on her.
When you arrive at your mother's house, she looks outside through a small crack to greet you. The apartment or front door can hardly be opened - as if something is blocking the way. Your mother asks you to wait a short moment, you hear a rumble and finally get in through a slightly larger crack. What awaits you behind the apartment door silences her. Already in the hallway it is hardly possible for you to put one foot in front of the other - the mountains of decoration, clothing and apparently useless objects are too large. In addition, between all the mountains of objects of various kinds, you occasionally catch sight of deposit bottles, packaging waste and envelopes. The air is bad, it smells musty. Startled, you look speechlessly at your mother, who is standing next to you.
The Messie Syndrome: Basic Information
What may sound like a fictional story to many people at first, is bitter reality for those affected. We are talking about the so-called Messie Syndrome.
In order to support an affected person as a relative or other close person or to be able to change something as an affected person, it is helpful to understand the Messie Syndrome in the first place.
Persons with Messie Syndrome have great difficulty in parting with or disposing of objects. Affected individuals accumulate different things at home to an excessive degree without any order that is apparent to outsiders. As a result, there is neglect and sometimes littering of their own living space. Due to the cluttering of one's own living space, it becomes difficult to walk through and thus no longer properly usable.
The medical classification
Messie Syndrome is not yet listed in ICD-10, the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. However, it does appear in DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. While existing medical conditions of various types (including mental illness) have been listed in the ICD-10, the DSM-5 as a classification developed specifically for mental disorders.
But what does this mean in concrete terms?
The inclusion of Messie Syndrome in this particular classification system makes it clear that Messie Syndrome must be seen for what it is: a disorder. Affected persons are (contrary to many prevailing prejudices) not too lazy or unwilling to treat their own living space with care and attention. Sick persons are not able to part with the collected objects due to their mental condition in their respective life situation. Insofar as a change is to be brought about, they need some kind of support.
A concomitant of mental illness
Most often, the Messie Syndrome occurs as a concomitant of one or more mental illnesses. In this context, psychotic disorders, obsessive-compulsive and attention-deficit disorders, depression, and addictive disorders should be mentioned.
For example, the lives of schizophrenic or psychotic people may be dominated by delusions and associated anxiety. One's own home is often used as a protective space against the dangers supposedly looming in the environment. Thus, hoarding items in one's own home can provide a sense of security and thus be experienced as relief from mental health problems. For those with dementia, excessive collecting can also provide a sense of security. The feeling arises of being able to maintain one's own world a little further, while the loss of one's own memory abilities and thus also of the original world of life continues to progress.
In the case of existing addictive disorders, the typically chaotic and unstructured collecting of things is more an expression of the loss of control, which is characteristic of the lives of addicted people. Obsessive-compulsive people with Messie Syndrome, on the other hand, often hoard in a structured way.
This list is by no means to be considered exhaustive. Rather, we are concerned with raising awareness that every person affected by the Messie Syndrome has a right to be perceived as an individual. No living environment and no living reality are like the other.
