I chose Kulturwerke directly because of their friendliness and support, even during the first interviews.
Before such a year abroad there are many things you should be informed about, be it cultural differences you should know about beforehand, or of course formal things like documents to fill out.
I felt so super supported in all of this. I had several Zoom meetings where there were a lot of other exchange students who also wanted to do a year abroad in the US.
You are also in a WhatsApp group with Kulturwerke staff and your parents, where you can easily ask questions via text or voice message.
For example, I had some formal problems with applying for my visa, but Kulturwerke gave me great support so that everything was finally sorted out.
But even after the year abroad has started and you are in America, you are still in contact with Kulturwerke Deutschland. You have monthly feedback meetings via Zoom and can also contact them.
Of course, you also have an American organization on site with contacts who visit you regularly to make sure that everything is in order.
This feeling of being supported is very important during a year abroad, because you are in a foreign country without your parents, and I'm glad that Kulturwerke is there for me so that I can enjoy my time here to the fullest.
