Robb MacDonald defends people charged with criminal offences in Toronto and across Ontario, from a first impaired driving charge to first degree murder. He has practised criminal law exclusively for more than 20 years, and his forte is the jury... trial, the hardest room in the courthouse.
Clients get a lawyer who tells them the truth about their case at the first meeting, including when the news is bad, and who prepares every file as though it is going to trial, because that is what moves a Crown. The office sits at Spadina and Richmond, minutes from the Superior Court at 361 University Avenue, and Robb answers the phone day and night, since arrests do not keep business hours.
What sets this practice apart
Other lawyers hire him, and so do police officers. Members of the Ontario defence bar have retained Robb when they were charged themselves, and so have serving officers. In a profession where everyone watches everyone else work, that is the one referral that cannot be bought.
Judges say it on the record. A Superior Court justice entering her third decade on the bench told Robb she could count on one hand the number of times she had commended counsel as she was commending him. A judge of the Ontario Court of Justice thanked him for work that was professional and wonderful at every stage.
Two murder acquittals in a single summer. In 2025, two different juries returned not guilty verdicts weeks apart, and both clients walked out of their courthouses.
Trained inside the best. Robb started at the office of the late Edward Greenspan QC after first year law, then articled in advocacy at Gowling WLG. He now practises in one of the country's premier criminal chambers alongside John Struthers and David Butt.
A two time provincial advocacy champion. He won both the Arnup Cup and the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association Cup in law school, taking best individual advocate at the latter.
A trial practice, not a plea mill. Flat fees quoted by stage so clients know the cost before committing, a free first consultation, and payment plans for most matters.
Areas of practice
Murder and manslaughter, sexual assault, domestic assault, assault, impaired driving and DUI, drug offences including possession, trafficking and importing, firearms, guns and gangs, fraud, theft and property crimes, criminal harassment and threats, youth and young offender matters, bail hearings and bail variations, and Charter applications. Jury and judge alone trials in the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice.
Where he appears
Toronto and the GTA, including Scarborough, Brampton, Milton and Oshawa, and the Peel and Durham courthouses. Elsewhere in Ontario including Ottawa. Serious matters taken across Canada.
