Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1960 and raised in Swampscott, Howard demonstrated a strong academic and business acumen from an early age. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts with a BBA in Accounting, and went on to earn both his Juris Doctor and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, completing his studies at UPenn Law School and the Wharton School of Business.
In 1984, Howard co-founded Bailey, Martin & Appel, a Philadelphia-based brokerage firm, marking the beginning of a long and successful career in financial services. He later founded HMA Investments in 1989, through which he led a wide range of IPOs, capital raises, and public market transitions. Known for his keen market instincts, strategic clarity, and commitment to ethical leadership, Howard has advised clients across industries including energy, technology, healthcare, education, and consumer goods.
Beyond his financial accomplishments, Howard Appel is a passionate philanthropist. In memory of his son Stephen, he established the Chabad of Fairmount in Philadelphia, which serves as a hub for education, community, and spiritual life.
