The philosophy of religion is a philosophical system developed by its practitioners as a way to understand the nature of God, the role of religion in society and other human-related problems. Its proponents have argued that religious concepts... cannot be properly understood without an understanding of the philosophy of religion, which seeks to account for many of the phenomena that arise from the way people think about and interpret religious texts. Some philosophers argue that without such an account, we are unable to appreciate why certain things happen and why they are things that we consider to be sacred. This article provides an overview of the philosophy of religion and its relationship to the modern world.

Religion is a philosophical phenomenon involving the ideas and beliefs of religious adherents about the existence and nature of God, the role of religion in society and other aspects of human existence. Philosophers have been exploring these questions for thousands of years. Since Christianity arose as a major religious movement, there has been much work done on the subject of religion. In particular, there have been many attempts to explain certain stories in the Bible, the Book of Mormon and other books of scripture in a way that reconciles the apparent contradictions that can occur when attempting to analyze scriptures from different time periods. Although other faiths have attempted to apply some of these same ideas, no other religion has maintained such a robust presence and influence for such a long period of time.

The word ""philosophy"" was originally used to refer to a branch of ancient learning that concerned itself with the principles of mathematics, the sciences and arts. It was also the name given to the theories and concepts of mathematicians who developed a way of viewing the world through the lens of logic. The religious sphere has used this idea and concept of philosophy of religion to explain a variety of phenomena associated with religion. The most popular theory of the philosophy of religion is that of Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican monk and Catholic theologian. Aquinas' basic claim is that religion is nothing more than human concepts turned into ways of life. He states that religions exist in the same way that natural laws or facts exist. They simply have a different meaning and application.
